Ivinghoe Beacon and the Chiltern Hills

Ivinghoe Beacon and the Chiltern Hills walk

See a selection of photos from this walk.

This walk gives you an excellent introduction to the beautiful rolling countryside of the Chiltern Hills, which lie only a few miles to the northwest of London.

The route begins with an easy stroll down the towpath of the Grand Union Canal to Cow Roast Marina, then cuts up through the hills to the charming historic village of Aldbury.

We stop for lunch here at one of the village pubs. One option, The Valiant Trooper, has a cosy, authentic feel and a pleasant beer garden, while the other option, The Greyhound, has a more refined atmosphere and once served as a film location for Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.

After lunch, we climb via forest paths to a huge stone obelisk dedicated to Francis Egerton, the Duke of Bridgewater. Egerton was credited with founding the British canal system, which was vital to the country's industrial development during the 19th century. The monument's viewing platform, accessible up a very steep staircase of 170 steps, is occasionally open; there are fantastic views from the top.

From here, wide woodland tracks lead north to the summit of Ivinghoe Beacon. Sweeping vistas of the southern Midlands open up as we reach the hilltop. It's an exhilarating spot.

The Ridgeway, at least 5000 years old, is purportedly Britain's most ancient road. We follow it south back towards the start of the walk at Tring, stopping for a tea break en route.
