English Country Walks masthead

King Beorthwulf's Gardens

This walk presents a rare opportunity to view the private gardens at Benington Lordship, a beautifully landscaped Georgian estate overlying the remains of a Saxon palace. Sometime back in the ninth century AD, King Beorthwulf of Mercia met here with his allies in a plot to oust the Danes from England. Highlights of the gardens include an ornate Norman-style gatehouse constructed by the noted Victorian landscape artist James Pulham, and a lavish herbaceous border featuring a panoply of multicoloured perennials – possibly the best example of its kind in England.
